Home Performance with Energy Star

Mid-State recognized that the building standards that were set by the Building Performance Institute were going to become to the gold standard in the industry. We began the long dificult task of becoming a certified contractor several years ago. Mid-State today is a Building Analyst, Envelope and Heating & Air Conditioning certified contractor. We are a one stop shop, we provide the air sealing, th einsulation and heating and air conditioning.

What should you expect from a Home Energy Assessment?

The first step consists of a technician taking an inventory and reporting on the current conditions of your home which will should include the following:

1. Health and Saftey check (carbon monoxide levels, moisture and indoor air quality problems)
2. Overal comfort level (cold/hot spots, indoor air quality, stuffiness/stale odors)
3. Air Seal Opportunities
4. Heating System Efficiency
5. Cooling System / Central Air Conditioning Efficiency
6. Domestic Hot Water System Efficiency

As your contractor we will identify any potential health and saftey issues during the initial assesment. We will comprise a proposal based on the audit that is conducted with the goal to acheive a minimum of a 20% reduction in your total energy usage. in order to achieve this level of savings generally a combination of Air Sealing, Insulation and some type of appliance is needed to be upgraded.
Air Sealing is a function that begins in the attic. We seal the large openings that existing around your chimney, penetrations where the plumbing pipes exit the home, electrical openings, soffits and the top of the wall plates. The second area of air sealing is directed towards an attached garage and finally the basement.
Insulation can consist of spray foam, blown-in cellulose or fiberglass batt type insulation. In New Jersey the minimum levels of insulation for your home start at R-38. Unfortunately, many homes that are constructed even today do not have this level of insulation.
The final step is to assess your mechanical systems in the home. These consist of your furnace or boiler, air conditioning system(s), heat pump and domestic water heater. To achieve the higher energy savings, generally your furnace/boiler will need to be upgraded and or your domestic hot water heater. These items will also qualify for the 2012 Federal Tax Credit.
Now you know how the program works, he are your incentives for all the improvements you just made to your home. As this program continues to evolve you should always check the NJ Clean Energy website for updates.
